A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday to celebrate Schimelpfenig Library’s official designation as a Family Place Library. City officials say the designation highlights Plano Public Library’s commitment to supporting families with early learning tools. Those tools include a special parenting collection, expanded and carefully designed play spaces, and the Family Place Playgroup program.
The goal of the Family Place Library national network is to provide a welcoming environment with resources to help families nurture their children’s development and learning during the critical first years of life.
Research shows that the ways adults respond to and interact with children during their first five years of life dramatically affect their brains. This has a huge impact on their social, emotional and intellectual development.
More than 400 libraries in 29 states, including Plano’s Harrington Library adhere to the Family Place Library model. A grant from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission help Schimelpfenig earn its new designation.
