with Family Place!
Family Place Libraries™ has entered into an exciting partnership with the National Center for Learning Disabilities revolving around their Get Ready to Read! (GRTR!) initiative. Get Ready to Read! is an early literacy program designed to help parents, early educators, and child care professionals ensure that young children are equipped with the fundamental skills necessary for learning to read.
Three major components of the partnership include the development of:
Literacy Activity Kits - created by Family Place and GRTR! staff, the kits contain 36 early literacy skill-building activities in English and Spanish, and the supplemental resources necessary to complete the fun interactive activities, such as magnetic letters, chalk, crayons and paper. Designed to assist parents and caregivers with building their pre-kindergartner’s early literacy skills, these free kits will be distributed to Family Place Libraries during Early Literacy Training.
Early Literacy Training - Over the next two years, four training sessions specifically designed for Family Place staff will be held in various locations throughout the country. During these trainings librarians will:
- be introduced to the Get Ready to Read! website and materials as well as the Literacy Activity Kits
- learn how libraries can provide access to these materials
- develop strategies for engaging parents and caregivers
- explore ways of incorporating these materials into existing library programs, outreach and networking activities.
